How to Become a Pastry Chef?
Cédric Grolet, Pierre Hermé, Philippe Conticini, these are names that leave no one indifferent today.
Indeed, these giants of contemporary French pastry have become examples for many amateur and professional pastry chefs.
For some, it is thanks to these great names in the profession that the desire to join this world by becoming pastry chefs themselves was born.
If you too have this idea but don't know how to professionalize, here is the approach to follow to, perhaps, one day rival our greatest Chefs!
How to Become a Pastry Chef?
The pastry chef's expertise is vast, allowing them to create pastries, of course, but also viennoiseries, confectioneries, petits fours, and other chocolate delights.
The pastry chef can later specialize in one or more of these categories if they wish.
To develop and master all these skills, you will need patience and hard work!
Several training paths are available if you want to become a pastry chef:
- The CAP Pâtisserie: Accessible after the 3ème and lasting two years, this apprenticeship is the most popular and provides the best technical foundation to start.
- The BAC Pro Pâtissier: For those who wish to attend high school and obtain a baccalaureate diploma, the Bac Pro is the best option.
It offers both theoretical and practical training over three years in a vocational high school.
- The BTS Pâtisserie: Accessible after the Bac, this course, which can be done alternately, also combines theory and practice for the application of learning. This course is perfect for those who decide to become a pastry chef "later in life."
- The Bachelor Pâtisserie: Less known, this path is still possible and allows you to add management and business skills to basic pastry skills. Ideal for those planning to open their own pastry shop or bakery in the long term.
Each of these training paths corresponds to different situations and/or needs, depending on the person's age, situation, and project.
Whatever the chosen path, the profession of pastry chef is highly sought after, and apprentices will have no difficulty finding a position quickly. In bakeries, pastry shops, or more specialized stores with chocolatiers or ice cream makers.
You can also find a place in grand hotels or palaces, which often collaborate with their own pastry chef.
As we have seen, the field of possibilities is open to you if you wish to pursue the profession of pastry chef and one day have your name alongside the Greats!
